With Superpop Venezuela LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES set out to pay homage to the Venezuelan artists and songs that most influenced the pioneering Latin Dance and Alternative group. While the motive was to shine a light on artists who came before them, the resulting album has once again solidified Los Amigos’ reputation as a band “responsible for some of the most gorgeous musical moments in the Latin Alternative genre.” (From the book:Rock en Español: The Latin Alternative Rock Explosion)

Having already won a wealth of praise as “the richest thing to come from Caracas since oil” (NY Daily News), Superpop Venezuela is now beginning to notch impressive end-of-year critic picks and award recognition. A visit to Amazon.com shows that Superpop Venezuela is the only Latin album appearing in the Top-10 of the editorial staff’s “Best Music of 2006” list. Positioning Los Amigos alongside artists such as Bob Dylan, Neko Case, KT Tunstall, John Mayer & Gnarls Barkley, Amazon calls the album a hilarious, booty-shaking journey into the group's seductive, endlessly inventive brand of lunatic genius.” Likewise, SPV was also just recognized in the Chicago Tribune’s Year-End Latin music Top-10.

Showing that Los Amigos’ musical peers also agree with the critic’s opinion, Superpop Venezuela has just received a GRAMMY nomination for “Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album”. This marks the second GRAMMY Nomination for the transplanted Venezuelan New Yorkers. The band is sure to celebrate along with fans as they return to the road in early 2007.

A performance-oriented Latin dance band from Venezuela heavily indebted to funk and disco (with a dash of acid jazz), Los Amigos Invisibles made a big splash in their homeland in 1995 with their debut album, A Typical and Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band, which featured odd Japanese animé-style artwork.

Band members Julio Briceño (vocals), José Luis Pardo (guitar, songwriting), Armando Figueredo (keyboards), Mauricio Arcas (raps), José Rafael Torres (bass), and Juan Manuel Roura (drums) supported their growing reputation with a series of underground dance parties at the mostly deserted clubs of Caracas. However, financial difficulties led the group to move to New York in 1997. They signed with David Byrne's Luaka Bop imprint and released their American debut, The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, in 1998. Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey into Space was release two years later.
