Bassist/composer/band leader Ben Allison has developed his own instantly identifiable sound. Known for his inspired arrangements, inventive grooves and hummable melodies, Ben draws from the jazz tradition and a range of influences from rock and folk to classical and world music, and seamlessly blends them into a cinematic, cohesive whole.
With his groups The Ben Allison Band, Man Size Safe, Peace Pipe, and Medicine Wheel, Ben has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Brazil, winning fans and building new audiences with an adventurous yet accessible sound and a flair for the unexpected.
Ben performed his Carnegie Hall debut with his group in 2012.
His latest album, Action-Refraction, reached #1 on the US Jazz Radio Charts and was cited as one of the best of the year by NPR, JazzTimes Magazine, Time Out NY and many others. Benís previous 6 albums have also topped the radio charts, remaining in the #1 spot for as much as 11 weeks.
At the age of 25, Ben founded the Jazz Composers Collective, a non-profit organization that fostered new music. As a NY Chapter Board member of NARAS, Ben recently testified in front of Congress on issues relating to performance royalties and the future of audio.
As a writer, Ben has contributed articles to many music-related publications including Downbeat, JazzTimes, the IAJE Journal, Premier Guitar, Bass Player and others.
Ben wrote the theme for the popular NPR radio program On The Media, which is heard by well over 1,000,000 listeners weekly.
