Sumie Kaneko presents her world jazz project J-Trad & More with her band from NYC. Sumie is World Music Vocalist, Japanese Koto and Shamisen player and her music has been recognized as a uniquely chromatic uses of the instruments, blending the folk and traditional of Japan with contemporary improvisational and experimental music.
Born and raised in Chiba, Japan. She started playing Koto at 5 years of age. Later at 18 years old, she won in Takasaki International competition in Koto performance. At Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, where she started Shamisen, she immediately found a global possibility of the instruments and in 2002 she started studying Jazz vocal at Berklee College of Music. In 2005, she founded extended alternative world music project “J-Trad & More”. Her project received high achievement from world famous Jamey Haddad, David Fiuczynski, Joe Lovano, and has worked with first-late world music players such as Taiko players: Kenny Endo and Kaoru Watanabe, Japanese Court Music players: Mayumi Miyata, Hitomi Nakamura, Takeshi Sasamoto and many more, has collaborated with the Pulitzer Prize Winner Paula Vogel, Contemporary Puppeteer Basil Twist and Principal Dancer at Boston Ballet Misa Kuranaga. She was also appeared in TED, Carnegie hall, Museum of Fine Arts Boston,Tokyo National Theatre and toured with Yoko Reikano Kimura in South America as a part of JAILA by Japan Foundation.
Sumie is currently based in 3 cities: NYC, Boston and Tokyo and expanding her literary borderless music. The show program will be based on the debut album J-Trad & More which has been released in September 2012. This time she will deliver more organic sound with acoustic instrumentation.
