The bi-lingual, cross-cultural, rhythmic mélange flows from the first note of a Baby Loves Salsa (BLS) show. It is a smooth and subtle sound and presentation that inspires and provides an atmosphere for families (with kids 6 months – 7 years) to enjoy music and dance together, and share educational themes both for kids and adults, including brief forays into clave theory (the backbone of salsa), counting in “son”( a Cuban rhythm and the foundation of salsa) or the abc’s sung and performed as an acapella Latin swing solo. This is no dumbed down kids’ music. Featuring some of the top musicians in contemporary Latin music, BLS spins out of the recently established tradition and success of the Baby Loves Disco national parties and the Sharon Jones led Baby Loves Jazz record and band.
Led by singer/songwriter/arranger, Jose Conde (Ola Fresca), BLS grooves hard in different rhythms under the umbrella of salsa. From Cuban son, to Colombian Cumbia, from Descarga, to Puerto Rican plena, from cha-cha-cha, to merengue to rumba guaguanco. The bi-lingual lyrics in the songs are about cats and dogs, going to the beach, the family of music, a drum that wants more respect from the piano etc. Some of the songs are original and the rest are original BLS "salsafied" renditions of children’s classics such as Old Macdonald and "Wheels on the Bus". Audience participation is almost mandatory at BLS shows as the band at one point becomes a “music box” which the public "cranks" and plays by shouting "faster!!!"
The BLS project and band, a concept of Andy Hurwitz of Rope a Dope Records, appeared on the scene on summer of 2009 with release of the first Baby Loves Salsa cd "Songs for Gatitos y Perritos" and numerous concerts and shows in the United States including Green Apple Music Festival- Miami, Central Park Summerstage, Highline Ballroom, Levitt Stage Memphis and more. Jose Conde is joined by the great Panamanian percussionist Renato Thoms and a Latin Quartet.
