Courtyard Series: Berklee at the Regattabar - Ester Wiesnerova
Ester Wiesnerova (1994) is a vocalist and composer who is interested mainly in fusion of jazz and other genres (Slovak folk, classical music). However, as she likes to say, the genre is not important. What is important is what the music can create and change in us. Ester is currently studying vocal performance and jazz composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She was awarded the highest scholarship available in the voice department, the "Sylvia M Zunz Endowed Scholarship". Her other achievements include Forbes' "30 under 30" award (30 most successful Slovaks under the age of 30) and "the Best Newcomer of the Year" award in the competition New Faces of Slovak Jazz. The most important person for Ester's musical growth has been her mom - a piano teacher. Thanks to her, Ester has been singing in a worship/gospel band and playing piano since she was five. Ester studied voice with Ms Eva Pacovska in Private Secondary School of Performing Arts in Nitra. In school, she became interested in scenic music for plays. She composed music for school performances and sang at the theatre in Nitra. During high school Ester was already an active performer. As there is no formal jazz education in Slovakia, she was searching for information by herself and received scholarships for masterclasses in Cyprus, Italy, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Ester became well-known, mainly thanks to a TV competition, The Voice of Czechoslovakia. She was also recognized for her volunteer activities - organizing fundraising events on behalf of disabled children, concerts in prison and rest homes, and music workshops for children.
