RICHARD GALLIANO
RICHARD GALLIANO is an incomparable accordionist and composer, who has both revolutionized the traditional music associated with the accordion, and also legitimized that instrument in unconventional genres. He is a fine interpreter of the music of Astor Piazzolla, and has continued in Piazzolla's tradition of modern tango. A Frenchman of Italian ancestry, Galliano is also a major figure in the movement that modernized musette, the turn-of-the century Parisian dance hall music that was France's answer to the tango.
Galliano, who started playing the accordion as a child, began improvising and adapting the accordion to jazz inspired by Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool sessions and the hard bop of Max Roach and Clifford Brown.
From 1973-76, he gained experience as a composer and arranger as a member of Claude Nougaro's big band, and later worked with Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Enrico Rava, Jan Garbarek, Michel Petrucciani, Philip Catherine, Toots Thielemans, Pierre Michelot, Didier Lockwood, Eddy Louiss and Joe Zawinul, among others.
In January 1994 Galliano formed a trio with Daniel Humair and J.F. Jenny-Clark that performed at major clubs, concert halls and festivals throughout Europe.
Galliano has recorded many great albums as a leader since he signed an exclusive contract with Dreyfus Jazz in 1993, including Viaggio with Lolo Bellonzi, Michelot and Bireli Lagrene (1993); Laurita with Joey Baron, Palle Danielsson, Michel Portal, and guest soloists Thielemans and Lockwood (1995); New York Tango with Lagrene, George Mraz and Al Foster (1996); Blow Up, a duet recording with clarinetist Portal (1998); French Touch, with J.F. Jenny-Clark, Daniel Humair, Remi Vignolo and Andre Ceccarelli (1999); Passatori, a collection of orchestral works rooted in Jazz, tango and European musette accompanied by soloists from the Orchestra della Toscana (2000); and Concert Inedits, three CD box set that captured his late 90's live performances in solo, duet and trio formats (2000). In celebration of his 50th birthday, Gallianissimo! The Best Of Richard Galliano was released in June 2001.
Galliano released "Face to Face" in 2002, on which he collaborated with a brilliant French Hammond organist Eddy Louiss. This is one of those rare duet performances where, drawing on a colorful repertoire and an amazing musical compatibility, two musicians inspire and complement each other in the sheer joy of artistic creation.
In 2003, Dreyfus released Galliano's "Piazzolla Forever," a live recording from his sold-out tour of the same name. The album received rave reviews, including 4 stars from DownBeat, and in May, he performed a triumphant three night engagement at New York's Lincoln Center.
